FPNA: satisfied with the broad interest at the information sessions of Parke Marino Aruba
ORANJESTAD, ARUBA – Fundacion Parke Nacional Aruba (FPNA) has intensified the consultation process of Parke Marino Aruba. The first informative sessions were a success with a lot of interest and support from the public. Attendeesbrought forward many important points for consideration and posed numerous questions related to the current status of Parke Marino Aruba. FPNA would like to emphasize thatparticipation of the entire community in these informative sessions is important in order to broaden the collaboration and involvement of individuals and organizations in the consultation process.
During these informative sessions, FPNA introduces itself as the independent organization for nature conservation,responsible for the management of the protected nature areasof Aruba. An overview is also given of all protected nature reserves that FPNA currently manages, including the Parke Marino Aruba which consists of four (4) Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). More information is given about the main goal of nature conservation. FPNA applies Ecosystem-Based Management (EBM) in its conservation work. EBM is an integrated adaptive management approach that helps us consider tradeoffs in resource uses and to protect and sustain diverse and productive ecosystems and the services they provide. Informed by science, EBM incorporates the entire ecosystem, including humans, into resource management decisions.
An ecosystem can consist of several habitats, such as mangrove forests, seagrass meadows, coral reefs, and the open sea. Each habitat has an important role in the ecology of marine life and offers ecosystem services. Seagrass fields, for example, are a food source for sea turtles, conch and sea urchins, and a shelter for many small fish species and other animals. In addition to these ecological functions, the seagrass offers even more services such as stabilizing sediment on the sea floor so that the water remains clear and seagrass is very efficient in converting carbon dioxide into oxygen, which helps in the fight against climate change.
Our marine life consists of many species and ecosystem-based management ensures the preservation of a wide variety of species. With this high biodiversity, the ecosystem is more resilient. Yet there are several species that require more attention than others, such as endangered species, keystonespecies and invasive species.During the informative sessions, the four (4) MPAs of Parke Marino Aruba arediscussed as well as their designation aspart of the EU BEST project led by TNO. Many questions and concerns have alreadycome forward regarding the designation of the MPAs, which FPNA shares with the public. Especially the success of ecosystem-based management, which is so far the best approach for marine conservation, will be limited if the designated areas do not cover entire ecosystems. Marine life does not recognize human boundaries. It is important that everyone appreciates and respects the nature around the entire island, because that is the only way to ensure that Aruba can continue to count on the sea for her ecosystem services, including the services for our economic pillar, tourism.
Parke Marino Aruba has started the consultation process in order to achieve an integral and inclusive management,together with all stakeholders. The informative sessions are just the beginning and there will be at least four (4) other opportunities for stakeholders to contribute their input during the process. More informative sessions will be held this month on 14, 16 and 18 September and there is also a survey running to provide an overview of the different activities that take place in Parke Marino Aruba, as well as the perception of the natural, social and economic value. FPNA: tevreden met de grote interesse in de informatieve sessies van Parke Marino Aruba
ORANJESTAD, ARUBA – Fundacion Parke Nacional Aruba(FPNA) heeft het consultatie proces van Parke Marino Aruba geïntensiveerd. De eerste informatieavonden waren een succes met veel interesse en steun van het publiek. Het publiek bracht vele belangrijke punten en vragen naar voren om elkaar zo te introduceren en bekend te raken met de actuele status van Parke Marino Aruba. FPNA nodigt meer personen en de gehele bevolking uit om deel te nemen aan deze informatieve sessies om zo de samenwerking en betrokkenheid van personen en organisaties bij het consultatie proces te verbreden.
Tijdens de informatieve sessies wordt FPNA geïntroduceerdals de onafhankelijke organisatie voor natuurbeheerverantwoordelijk voor het beheer van de beschermde natuurgebieden van Aruba. Ook wordt er een beeld gegeven van alle beschermde natuurgebieden di FPNA momenteel beheerd, inclusief het Parke Marino Aruba dat bestaat uit vier (4) ‘Marine Protected Areas’ (MPAs).
Over Parke Marino Aruba wordt er onder andere meer informatie gegeven over het hoofddoel van natuurbehoud. FPNA zal zich inzetten op een ecosysteem gebaseerd beheer, oftewel ‘Ecosystem-Based Management’ (EBM). EBM is een geïntegreerde adaptieve beheerbenadering die helpt bij het maken van afwegingen in het gebruik van natuurlijke hulpbronnen en het beschermen van de diversiteit en productieve ecosystemen en de diensten die ze leveren enondersteunen. Geïnformeerd door de wetenschap, neemt EBM het hele ecosysteem, inclusief mensen, op in beslissingen over natuurbeheer.
Een ecosysteem kan bestaan uit verschillende habitatten, zoals mangrovebossen, zeegrasvelden, koraalriffen en de open zee. Ieder habitat heeft een belangrijke rol in de ecologie van het zeeleven en biedt ecosysteemdiensten. Zeegrasvelden bijvoorbeeld, zijn een voedselbron voor zeeschildpadden, carko en zee-egels. Maar vormt ook een schuilplaats voor visjes en vele andere kleine dieren. Naast deze ecologische functies, biedt het zeegras nog meer diensten zoals het stabiliseren van sediment op de bodem waardoor het water helder blijft en zeegras is zeer efficiënt in het omzetten van koolstofdioxide naar zuurstof, wat helpt in de strijd tegen klimaatverandering.
Ons zeeleven bestaat uit vele soorten. Een ecosysteem gebaseerd beheer draagt zorg voor het behoud van een grote variatie aan soorten en met een deze hoge biodiversiteit is het ecosysteem veerkrachtiger. Toch zijn er verschillende soorten die meer aandacht vergen dan anderen, zoals bedreigde soorten, sleutelsoorten (keystone species) en invasieve soorten.
Tijdens de informatieve sessies wordt besproken waar de vier (4) MPA’s van Parke Marino Aruba zijn en dat dit is vastgelegd als onderdeel van het EU BEST project geleid door TNO. Veel vragen en bezorgheden komen naar voren met betrekking tot de aanwijzing van de gebieden, welke FPNA met het publiek deelt. Vooral voor ecosysteem gebaseerd beheer, welke tot nog toe de beste benadering is voor marine natuurbehoud, wordt gelimiteerd als de aangewezen gebieden niet gehele ecosystemen dekken. Het zeeleven herkend geen menselijke grenzen. Het is belangrijk dat iedereen de natuur rond het gehele eiland waardeert en respecteert, dat is namelijk de enige manier om zorg te dragen dat Aruba op de zee kan blijven rekenen voor alle ecosysteemdiensten, inclusief de diensten voor onze economische pilaar, toerisme.Parke Marino Aruba is begonnen aan het consultatie proces om zo samen met alle belanghebbenden te komen tot een integraal en inclusief beheer. De informatieve sessies zijn enkel het begin en er zullen nog minimaal vier (4) andere gelegenheden zijn voor belanghebbenden om hun inbreng bij te dragen tijdens het proces. Deze maand zullen er nog meer informatieve sessies gehouden worden en wel op 14, 16 en 18 september. Ookloopt er een enquête om een beeld te krijgen van de verschillende activiteiten die plaatsvinden in Parke Marino Aruba alsook de perceptie van de natuurlijke, sociale en economische waarde.
