Dhr. Biemans nieuw lid Raad van Toezicht van Fundacion Parke Nacional Aruba
ORANJESTAD, ARUBA – Afgelopen maand is niemand minder dan de gerenomeerde eigenaar en CEO van het Bucuti& Tara Beach Resort – de heer Ewald Biemans – toegetreden tot de Raad van Toezicht van Fundacion Parke NacionalAruba (FPNA). Hiermee is de Raad van FPNA bijna op volle sterkte en klaar voor de uitdagingen die de komende tijd op stapel staan: onder meer het verder professionaliseren en weerbaar maken van de organisatie, en ook het realiseren van diverse ambitieuze plannen ten behoeve van natuurbehoud, -beheer en duurzaamheid.
De heer Biemans geeft al decennia lang leiding aan het Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort. Onder zijn leiding is het hotel in 2016 als Green Globe Platinum-resort uitgeroepen tot ‘s werelds meest duurzame hotel. In 2020 ontving het resort de allerhoogste score van Green Globe, een duurzame certificering voor reis- en toerismebedrijven. Het is daarmee het eerste en enige CO2-neutrale hotel in het Caribisch gebied. Afgelopen maand won Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort als eerste hotel ter wereld de VN 2020 Climate Action Award. De altijd vooruitstrevende Biemans heeft al aangegeven nu te gaan voor ‘koolstof negatief’ (carbon negative).
De heer Biemans was in het verleden al lid van het bestuur van de Stichting Fundacion Parke Nacional Arikok, sinds 2017 opererend onder de naam Fundacion Parke NacionalAruba (FPNA). Zijn kennis en ervaring waren instrumenteel bij de oprichting van het Parke Nacional Arikok. Nu zal Biemans ongetwijfeld een centrale rol gaan innemen bij de transitie van FPNA naar een duurzame organisatie, die ‘low-impact’ nastreeft. Binnenkort hoopt FPNA ook een vijfde raadslid te verwelkomen en aan te kondigen. Hiermee zal de Raad van Toezicht voltallig zijn.
Fundacion Parke Nacional Aruba (FPNA)
FPNA is een onafhankelijke stichting, die sinds 2003 namens de overheid een groot deel van de Arubaanse natuur in beheer heeft. De Stichting opereert onder een professionele Raad van Toezicht en een Dagelijks Bestuur (Directie), en naar de maatstaven van Good Corporate Governance.
De voornaamste activiteiten van FPNA bestaan uit:
•de natuurgebieden beheren, beschermen, herstellen en ontwikkelen binnen het kader van een duurzame ontwikkeling en met het oog op biodiversiteit;
•het op duurzame wijze doen van Visitor Management binnen de beheergebieden;
•het verrichten van (toegepast, wetenschappelijk) onderzoek;
•het geven van voorlichting en het organiseren, steunen en bevorderen van educatieve activiteiten en projecten;
•het gevraagd en ongevraagd adviseren bij projecten en ontwikkelingen die direct of indirect te maken hebben met de natuur;
•het samenwerken met organisaties en personen die zich op overeenkomstig terrein bewegen.
Tot eind 2019 beheerde FPNA het Parke Nacional Arikok en het Ramsargebied Spaans Lagoen (samen met afwateringsgebieden Rooi Frances, Rooi Bringamosa en Rooi Taki). In 2019 is ook het nieuw opgerichte marine park onder het beheer van FPNA gebracht en in 2020 zijn er nog eens 13 terrestrische gebieden bijgekomen.

ORANJESTAD, ARUBA – Last month, none other than the renowned owner and CEO of the Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort – Mr. Ewald Biemans – joined the Supervisory Board of Fundacion Parke Nacional Aruba (FPNA). With this addition, the FPNA Board is almost at full strength and ready for the challenges that are in the pipeline in the near future: including further professionalization and building resilience of the organization, as well as the realization of various ambitious plans for nature conservation and sustainability.
Mr. Biemans has been managing the Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort for decades. Under his leadership, the hotel was named the world’s most sustainable hotel as a Green Globe Platinum resort in 2016. In 2020, the resort received the highest rating of Green Globe certification for sustainable travel and tourism companies. This makes it the first and only CO2-neutral hotel in the Caribbean. Last month, Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort was the first hotel in the world to win the UN 2020 Climate Action Award. The always progressive Biemans has already indicated that he is now going for “carbon negative”.
Mr. Biemans was a member of the board of the Fundacion Parke Nacional Arikok in the past, operating under the name Fundacion Parke Nacional Aruba (FPNA) since 2017. His knowledge and experience were instrumental in the creation of Parke Nacional Arikok. Now Biemans will undoubtedly play a central role in the transition of FPNA to a sustainable organization that strives for “low-impact”. FPNA also hopes to welcome and announce a fifth board member soon. With this, the Supervisory Board will be complete.
Fundacion Parke Nacional Aruba (FPNA)
FPNA is an independent foundation, which since 2003 has managed a large part of Aruban nature on behalf of the government. The Foundation operates under a professional Supervisory Board and an Executive Board, and according to the standards of Good Corporate Governance.
FPNA’s main activities consist of:
•managing, protecting, restoring and developing natural areas within the framework of sustainable development and optimizing biodiversity;
•sustainably conducting Visitor Management within the management areas;
•conducting (applied, scientific) research;
•providing information and organizing, supporting and promoting educational activities and projects;
•advising – solicited and unsolicited – on projects and developments that are directly or indirectly related to nature;
•collaborating with organizations and people who are active in the same field.
Until the end of 2019, FPNA managed the Parke Nacional Arikok and the Ramsar area Spaans Lagoen (together with drainage areas Rooi Frances, Rooi Bringamosa and Rooi Taki). In 2019, the newly established marine park was also brought under the management of FPNA and in 2020 an additional 13 terrestrial areas were added as management areas.
