Vrijdag avond heeft het radarsysteem van de Kustwacht in het Caribisch Gebied een verdacht contact waargenomen dat richting Aruba voer. Het contact was een vaartuig dat vanuit de territoriale wateren van Venezuela op verdachte wijze richting het eiland voer. Dit was voor het Rescue and Coordination Center van de Kustwacht en het steunpunt Aruba reden om in actie te komen. Een Metal Shark, met aan boord een team van kustwachters en Arubaanse militie, werd naar de locatie van het vaartuig gedirigeerd. Bij aankomst bij het verdachte contact trof men een vaartuig in zeer slechte staat van onderhoud met 14 ongedocumenteerden aan boord aan. De groep ongedocumenteeerden hadden ook inheemse dieren bij zich waaronder, 1 vechthaan en 19 papagaaien en een pakket met vermoedelijke steroïde ampullen. Alle ongedocumenteerde Venezolanen die het eiland op illegale wijze probeerden binnen te komen zijn aan de Warda nos Costa en de Korps Politie Aruba overgedragen. De veterinaire dienst heeft de inheemse dieren meegenomen. De Dienst Volksgezondheid was ook aanwezig om de personen op COVID-19 te testen.
Het gebruik van een niet zeewaardige boot in deze case bewijst nogmaals dat personen veel risico nemen om de tocht naar de ABC-eilanden te volbrengen. De Kustwacht waarschuwt mensen om niet aan deze tochten te beginnen. Het is bekend dat de boten die voor deze overtochten worden gebruikt, bijna zonder uitzondering, niet zeewaardig zijn en dat opvarenden een groot risico nemen.
De Kustwacht gaat door met haar intensieve patrouillering om de maritieme grenzen van Aruba, Curaçao en Bonaire te bewaken. Voor de patrouillering krijgt de Kustwacht assistentie van Defensie in de vorm van het stationsschip Zr.Ms. Groningen. De Kustwacht verzoekt ook de hulp van alle burgers die op zee en de kustlijnen verdachte situaties waarnemen, bel 913. Met uw hulp houden we de zee en de kustlijnen van het eiland veilig.
