FPNA: Representatives of all branches participated with much enthusiasm in the first interactive workshops of Parke Marino Aruba
ORANJESTAD, ARUBA – Fundacion Parke Nacional Aruba (FPNA) is in the midst of a stakeholder engagement process for Parke Marino Aruba. This includes several press and media communications and 10 informative evenings held publicly and online during the months of September and October to introduce the current status of Parke Marino Aruba and the stakeholder engagement process. There is also a survey running on the 4 MPAs. Last month, FPNA invited key stakeholders to the first interactive workshop to give insight of all branches on the current situation of Parke Marino Aruba and the vision for the future.
These were the first interactive sessions, where a total of 64 participants contributed to a SWOT-analysis in interactive work sessions. A SWOT-analysis is a situational analysis for Parke Marino Aruba. To ensure the safety and health of all participants the participants were divided into two groups for the sessions. Each group participated in a session of 2 intensive days where participants discussed strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats for each MPA of Parke Marino Aruba together. In each group there were 6 to 7 tables with representatives from different branches related to Parke Marino Aruba, such as: nature, the community, authorities, fishermen and tourism. Each table was led by facilitators – IPA Movecion y Salud students – who guided the group through discussions to reach results in a structured way.
After the situational analysis to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats for each MPA of Parke Marino Aruba, each group also discussed solutions and actions to utilize the strengths and opportunities and mitigate the weaknesses and threats. These results per table were then presented to the rest of the group. The 2-day session was rounded off with an exercise to formulate the vision 2030 for our marine life.
With the tremendous input provided by all the attending stakeholders, FPNA is working hard to process all information to present and publish the results in January 2022. Based on a first review of the results, it can already be said that all branches are concerned about the current state of our marine environment and that improvement is desirable. There were multiple suggestions to create opportunities for a balance between the use of marine areas while ensuring marine life can also be restored. Suggestions included different projects to restore corals, seagrasses and mangroves, additional research and monitoring to determine current states and best practices, educational programs and projects to raise awareness, and the need for regulation and zoning of human activities to minimize their impact.
Based on the full results of these interactive sessions that will be presented and published in January 2022, together with the results of the survey, the stakeholder engagement process will continue in March 2022 with another interactive session to determine regulations and zoning for the MPAs of Parke Marino Aruba. Through this extensive process FPNA strives to compile an integrated management plan to be published in the second quarter of 2022, that considers the main goal of marine conservation as well as social and economic aspects.

FPNA: Vertegenwoordigers van alle branches namen met veel enthousiasme deel aan de eerste interactieve workshops van Parke Marino Aruba
ORANJESTAD, ARUBA – Fundacion Parke Nacional Aruba (FPNA) is bezig met een consultatieproces van betrokkenen voor Parke Marino Aruba. Dit omvat verschillende pers- en mediacommunicatie en 10 informatieve avonden die publiekelijk en online werden gehouden om de huidige status van Parke Marino Aruba en het proces van betrokkenheid van belanghebbenden te introduceren. Er loopt ook een enquête over de 4 MPA’s. FPNA nodigde vorige maand belangrijke stakeholders uit voor de eerste interactieve workshop om inzichten te krijgen van alle branches over de huidige situatie van Parke Marino Aruba en de visie voor de toekomst.
Bij deze eerste interactieve sessies was een in totaal van 64 deelnemers die bijdroegen aan een SWOT-analyse tijdens interactieve werksessies. Een SWOT-analyse is een situationele analyse voor Parke Marino Aruba. Om de veiligheid en gezondheid van de deelnemers te waarborgen, werden de deelnemers voor de sessies in twee groepen verdeeld. Elke groep nam deel aan een sessie van 2 intensieve dagen waar deelnemers samen sterke en zwakke punten, kansen en bedreigingen bespraken voor elke MPA van Parke Marino Aruba. In elke groep waren er 6 tot 7 tafels met vertegenwoordigers van verschillende takken gerelateerd aan Parke Marino Aruba, zoals: natuur, de gemeenschap, autoriteiten, vissers en toerisme. Elke tafel werd geleid door facilitators – studenten van IPA Movecion y Salud – die de groep door discussies leidden om op een gestructureerde manier resultaten te bereiken.
Na de situationele analyse om de sterke en zwakke punten, kansen en bedreigingen voor elke MPA van Parke Marino Aruba te identificeren, besprak elke groep ook oplossingen en acties om de sterke punten en kansen te benutten en de zwakke punten en bedreigingen te verminderen. De resultaten per tafel werden vervolgens gepresenteerd aan de rest van de groep. De 2-daagse sessie werd afgesloten met een oefening om de visie 2030 voor ons zeeleven te formuleren.
Met de grote hoeveelheid kostbare input van de aanwezige belanghebbenden, werkt FPNA hard om alle informatie te verwerken om de resultaten in januari 2022 te presenteren en te publiceren. Op basis van een eerste evaluatie van de resultaten kan al worden gezegd dat alle branches zich zorgen maken over de huidige staat van ons mariene milieu en dat verbetering wenselijk is. Er waren meerdere suggesties om mogelijkheden te creëren voor een evenwicht tussen het gebruik van zeegebieden en ervoor te zorgen dat het zeeleven ook kan herstellen. Suggesties waren onder andere verschillende projecten om koralen, zeegrassen en mangroven te herstellen, aanvullend onderzoek en monitoring om de huidige toestanden en oplossingen te bepalen, educatieve programma’s en projecten om het bewustzijn te vergroten en de noodzaak van regulatie en zonering van menselijke activiteiten om hun impact te minimaliseren.
Op basis van de volledige resultaten van deze interactieve sessies die in januari 2022 samen met de resultaten van de enquête worden gepresenteerd en gepubliceerd, zal het consultatieproces worden voortgezet in maart 2022 met een andere interactieve sessie om de regulatie en zonering voor de MPA’s van Parke Marino Aruba te bepalen. Via dit uitgebreide proces streeft FPNA ernaar een geïntegreerd beheerplan op te stellen en te publiceren in het tweede kwartaal van 2022 dat zowel rekening houdt met het hoofddoel van het behoud van de mariene biodiversiteit, als de sociale en economische aspecten.
