FPNA officially opened it ‘Center of Cultivation’ on Earth Day.
ORANJESTAD, ARUBA – On 22 April, Earth Day, Fundacion Parke Nacional Aruba (FPNA) continued with its effort for nature conservation with the inauguration of its Center of Cultivation by Minister Arends in the presence of the team of FPNA and guests. The Center of Cultivation is an investment thanks to funds of Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds Caribisch Gebied and donations from Aruba Airport Authority. This project is a clear example of the Earth Day 2022 theme, which is ‘Invest in Our Planet”.
Earth Day is a global event to demonstrate the importance of protecting our environment. The 52nd Earth Day and theme ‘Invest in Our Planet’ was a call for government and the private sector to contribute to the protection, conservation, and restoration of the degraded state of our nature. As individuals and as a community, we need to be aware of the impact that we have on the environment, ecosystems, and biodiversity, and change our ways of living to guarantee a diverse and resilient nature for the future.
As such, the team of FPNA started several months ago working on the ‘Center of Cultivation’ project which was inaugurated last week. The Center of Cultivation is the heart of FPNA’s Flora Biodiversity Enhancement and Climate Resilience Program. This workspace includes a seed bank, a workshop and plant nursery, and a composting station.
The seed bank will be utilized to store the seeds of more than 40 species of native and endangered species of shrubs and trees. The seeds will be used for cultivation but will also be stored to ensure genetic survival in case of pests and disease. The workshop adjacent to the plant nursery will increase the success rate of germination and propagation of young native flora, and the nursery area will be used to cultivate plants and taking care of them for one to two years until they are ready for outplanting and able to survive in our protected nature areas.
FPNA’s integral approach to conservation entails a focus on protection, preservation and restoration of Aruba’s unique biodiversity and has as its goal the maintenance and enhancement of the sustainability of each category of ecosystem services. The species of shrubs and trees to be cultivated have been chosen for their local scarcity but also for their ecological value for species of fauna such as the brown-throated parakeet, the blue-tailed emerald hummingbird, nectar and fruit-eating bats, bees and butterflies. With these chosen species of trees and shrubs, FPNA will enhance biodiversity and help increase the quality of ecosystem services.
The Center of Cultivation also will serve as a space for giving workshops, the selling of plants for private garden biodiversity enhancement, educational tours, and the opportunity for both locals and tourists to volunteer. In this way, FPNA involves the community in its cause of preserving Aruba’s native flora.
Last week, the Center of Cultivation was already host to the first workshops, with participants from the Junior Ranger Camp producing labels, sowing seeds and lending a helping hand in the plant nursery, as well as volunteers from the Wings of Hope program from the Aruba Airport Authority. This is a concrete example of how young and old can contribute to the conservation of nature.
Within the coming months, the composting station will be realized under the guidance of the Compost Club Aruba and with the participation of the community. The composting station will be used to sustainably recycle organic materials into compost to be able to grow plants that are healthier and more robust before continuing the next stage of their lives in nature.
FPNA would like to extend a warm thanks the Prins Bernhard Cultuur Fonds – Caribisch Gebied and the Aruba Airport Authorities for making this beautiful project possible. Also, a heartfelt thanks goes out to all rangers that contributed to the realization of the Center of Cultivation. This is only the start of FPNA’s flora conservation work, and it will be amplified in the future for a rich and diverse nature of Aruba.
FPNA will continue to Invest in Our Nature through different programs of monitoring and restoration within both the terrestrial, coastal and marine protected areas, to ensure a future in which we can enjoy a richer, healthier, and more diverse nature. ORANJESTAD, ARUBA – Op 22 april jongstleden, Earth Day, zette Fundacion Parke Nacional Aruba (FPNA) haar inspanningen voor natuurbehoud voort met de inhuldiging van haar Kweekcentrum door minister Arends, in aanwezigheid van het team van FPNA en gasten. Het Kweekcentrum is mogelijk gemaakt met fondsen van het Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds Caribisch Gebied en donaties van de Aruba Airport Authority. Dit project is een duidelijk voorbeeld van het thema van de ‘Dag van de Aarde’ 2022, namelijk ‘Investeer in Onze Planeet’.
Earth Day is een wereldwijd evenement om het belang van de bescherming van ons milieu onder de aandacht te brengen. Het thema van de 52e Earth Day, ‘Invest in Our Planet’, was een oproep aan de overheid en de private sector om bij te dragen aan de bescherming, het behoud en het herstel van de aangetaste staat van onze natuur. Als individuen en als gemeenschap moeten we ons bewust zijn van de impact die we hebben op het milieu, ecosystemen en de biodiversiteit, en onze manier van leven veranderen om een biodiversere en veerkrachtige natuur voor de toekomst te garanderen.
Zo is het team van FPNA enkele maanden geleden gestart met het werken aan het project ‘Center of Cultivation’, dat afgelopen week werd ingehuldigd. Dit Kweekcentrum is het hart van FPNA’s ‘Flora Biodiversity Enhancement and Climate Resilience Program’. Deze werkruimte omvat een zaadbank, een werkplaats, een plantenkwekerij, en een compoststation.
De zaadbank zal worden gebruikt om de zaden van meer dan 40 soorten inheemse en bedreigde bomen- en struikensoorten op te slaan. De zaden zullen worden gebruikt voor de teelt, maar zullen ook deels worden opgeslagen om genetische overleving te garanderen in geval van plagen en ziekten. De werkplaats naast de plantenkwekerij zal het slagingspercentage van ontkieming en vermeerdering van jonge inheemse flora verhogen, en de kwekerij zal worden gebruikt om planten te kweken en ze gedurende één tot twee jaar te verzorgen totdat ze uitgeplant worden in een van onze beschermde natuurgebieden en in staat zijn om daar te overleven.
FPNA’s integrale benadering van natuurbehoud behelst het beschermen, behouden en herstellen van Aruba’s unieke biodiversiteit en heeft als doel het behoud en de verbetering van de duurzaamheid van elke categorie ecosysteemdiensten. De te kweken soorten zijn gekozen vanwege hun lokale schaarste, maar ook vanwege hun ecologische waarde voor faunasoorten zoals de maisparkiet, blauwstaartsmaragdkolibrie, nectar- en fruit etende vleermuizen, bijen en vlinders. Met de gekozen soorten bomen en struiken zal FPNA de biodiversiteit verbeteren en de kwaliteit van ecosysteemdiensten ondersteunen en helpen verhogen.
Het Kweekcentrum zal ook dienen als een ruimte voor het geven van workshops, de verkoop van planten voor de verbetering van de biodiversiteit in de privétuin, educatieve rondleidingen, en de mogelijkheid bieden voor zowel de lokale bevolking als toeristen om vrijwilligerswerk te doen. Op deze manier betrekt FPNA de gemeenschap bij het behoud van de inheemse flora van Aruba.
Afgelopen week was het Kweekcentrum al gastheer voor de eerste workshops, waarbij deelnemers van het Junior Ranger Camp naambordjes vervaardigden, zaadjes zaaiden en helpende handjes boden in de plantenkwekerij, evenals vrijwilligers van het Wings of Hope-programma van de Aruba Airport Authority. Dit is een concreet voorbeeld van hoe jong en oud kunnen bijdragen aan het behoud van de natuur.
In de komende maanden wordt het compoststation gerealiseerd onder begeleiding van de Compost Club Aruba en met deelname van de gemeenschap. Het compoststation zal worden gebruikt om organisch materiaal duurzaam te recyclen tot compost om planten te kunnen kweken die gezonder en robuuster zijn voordat ze de volgende fase van hun leven in de natuur voortzetten.
FPNA wil het Prins Bernhard Cultuur Fonds – Caribisch Gebied en de Aruba Airport Authorities hartelijk bedanken voor het mogelijk maken van dit mooie project. Ook gaat een welgemeende dank uit naar alle rangers die hebben bijgedragen aan de realisatie van het Kweekcentrum. Dit is nog maar het begin van FPNA’s florabeschermingswerk en het zal in de toekomst worden versterkt ten behoeve van een rijke en diverse natuur van Aruba.
FPNA zal blijven investeren in de Arubaanse natuur door middel van verschillende programma’s van monitoring en herstel in zowel de terrestrische, kust- als mariene beschermde gebieden, om zo een toekomst te kunnen garanderen waarin we kunnen genieten van een rijkere, gezondere en meer diverse natuur. FPNA nodigt de gemeenschap van Aruba uit om te investeren in onze planeet, want een natuurrijke toekomst is een welvarende toekomst voor ons allemaal.
